RICHARD MERCER - THE EACH-WAY SPECIALIST
A different kind of racing service - built from data, technology, racecourse experience, trusted information and the judgement to know when all of those things align.
Richard Mercer didn't arrive in racing through the traditional route. His background was in accountancy, a world where numbers have to make sense, where evidence matters and where emotion has very little place in the final calculation.
That naturally shaped the way he first approached betting.
Rather than relying on hunches, newspaper tips or whatever happened to be fancied that morning, Mercer became fascinated by the possibility of finding repeatable patterns inside racing data.
He began building systems.
Race type. Price. Class. Form. Trainer performance. Market behaviour. Historical trends. The kind of factors that could be measured, compared and tested rather than simply guessed.
And they worked.
Mercer developed racing systems capable of identifying profitable betting opportunities and, for a numbers man, that was exactly what he had been looking for: rules, evidence and repeatability.
But the longer he worked with racing data, the more he began to notice something important.
It cannot automatically tell you that racing has changed.
Markets evolve. Bookmakers react. Trainers alter the way they campaign horses. Certain angles become more widely known. Prices contract. Edges that once looked powerful can gradually disappear.
A mechanical system can continue firing selections long after the reason it originally worked has weakened.
For Mercer, that became the limitation.
The answer wasn't to abandon the numbers. It was to understand what the numbers couldn't see.
The next stage of the Mercer approach came from getting closer to the sport itself, the racecourses, the people and the information that never appears neatly inside a historical database.
Mercer began spending more time at race meetings.
Not because he had suddenly stopped believing in data, but because he wanted to understand the part of racing that data alone could not capture.
Over time, that meant meeting people. Talking to people. Building relationships and contacts around the sport.
And, just as importantly, learning that not all racing information is equal.
There is always noise around racing. Rumours. Stable whispers. Opinions. Confidence. Excuses.
The skill is not simply having information.
That experience gradually changed the way Mercer selected his bets.
The systems and technology still did the heavy lifting at the beginning. They could process far more information than any individual could realistically analyse manually and identify the horses and races worthy of closer examination.
But a qualifier was no longer automatically a bet.
The numbers became the starting point rather than the finishing line.
Racecourse intelligence, contacts, current information, market context and Mercer's own judgement became additional filters.
And that is the philosophy behind Mercer Racing today.
When Richard Mercer first approached us, he already had a substantial record behind his betting.
It looked exceptional.
But there is an enormous difference between being shown a historical record and watching selections arrive before the races are run.
We weren't interested in launching Mercer Racing purely because a spreadsheet looked impressive.
So we gave him a simple challenge.
Send us the selections.
In advance.
Let us record everything.
No picking the good days afterwards. No deleting the losers. No rebuilding the approach once the results were known.
Just selections arriving before the event and being added to the record.
Proofing began on 24 March 2026.
And what happened next was the reason Mercer Racing moved from an idea to a service we wanted to launch.
Historical proofing results. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
BOG is the headline measure, but we also looked at what happened when the record was recalculated using two tougher price measures: Betfair Starting Price and Industry Starting Price.

The record includes the good, the bad and everything in between. The point is not that every selection wins, it doesn't. The point is that you can examine the historical record rather than being shown a carefully selected highlight reel.
